I was called out of the blue recently by a company called BT Smile.
The result of the call was that I foolishly enrolled myself in their Internet profile which promised all kinds of goodies including a page one listing with google.
This was on behalf of my company, Professional Joinery.
The domain name that was registered on my behalf was http://www.joinery-rotherham.co.uk.
Rotherham is the place where I come from and so this seemed reasonable at the time of the all.
I must state that this “contract” came under the heading of a Business to Business contract, which I found out later, was not covered by any consumer protection act.
So, the contract, which was quite expensive, also carried an on line Site Builder.This, in actual fact is quite good but fairly basic. It does, however come with a Google friendly bit of software that tells you if the pages you are creating are SEO friendly.
I built the site with 5 pages including the Home page and a contact page with a form element provided inside the software.
So, what did I get for my hard earned cash.
A listing on BT Smile and BT Customer Street which are both on Google page 1 for the keywords “joinery rotherham”
A chance to build a web site of my own with the domain name “Joiners-rotherham”, which I have also done and the site has also been listed on Google page 1 at number 8.
I have also recently built my own web site for http://www.professionaljoinery.co.uk which is Google page 1 number two for the keywords “joinery rotherham” and Google page 1 number 1 for the keywords uPVC Fascia rotherham and Google page 1 for a few other keywords.
The results you may think, are resulting in a succession of interested customers calling me asking for quotes for their work. WRONG…..
The result, up to press is NO CALLS, ZILCH.
Why, well I did what I should have done to start with, that is, do a little keyword research, after all, this is what I do when setting up all my other sites.
A quick search on the Google webmaster tools site revealed that the search term “joinery rotherham” returned the staggering result for a World wide search of the keyword term “joinery rotherham” of …. 56 searches Worldwide.
Be warned then and learn the easy way.
Build your own web sites and do your own keyword research in your own time.
Do not be taken in by sales people on the phone, even when they have the supposed famous name of BT behind them.
Never make an instant decision on these calls, tell the nice sales person that you need time to do a little research of your own and you will get back to them.
